A Christmas Day twister outbreak left damage across southern U.S. and tangled holiday travel plans, while weaker storm moves through the Northeast on Wednesday a day after tornadoes ripped through several states.
At least two people are dead after a severe weather system swept through the southern U.S. on Christmas Day. The wild Christmas weather was expected to continue into early Wednesday.
Tornadoes hit Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas, and damaged scores of homes and leaving tens of thousands of residents in the region without power, and also caused winter storms in Oklahoma.
The severe storms left more than 190,000 people in the dark Tuesday, power companies said.
Forecasters also said the weather system will move into the Midwestern U.S., causing blizzard conditions in parts of Arkansas, Ohio, Illinois and Indiana.
A 25-year-old man in Texas was killed after a tree fell on his pickup as he was driving on the northwest side of Houston, while a 28-year-old woman from Woodward, Oklahoma, was killed in an accident on a snow-covered two-lane highway.
More than 500 flights were canceled across the U.S. on Christmas Day, mostly flights heading to Texas,Dallas and Houston areas were smacked with a rare coating of snow and ice Tuesday.
