Apple sells smart–phones more than Samsung in the fourth quarter

Apple, the technology giant, has beaten Samsung Electronics in the number of smart-phones sold in the fourth quarter of 2011, as the company witnessed strong demand for the IPhone, according to Gartner Inc.

Apple's market share widened to 23.8% of the total smart-phones sold during the fourth quarter, up from 15.8% recorded a year earlier. Apple sold as much as 35.5 million IPhone, while Samsung sold around 34.0 million smart-phones. Furthermore, global sales of smart-phones inclined by 47% to 149 million smart-phones.

Nokia's market share on the other hand dropped to 12% from around 30% a year earlier, as the company's focus shifted to the introduction of Nokia's Lumia handsets.
