The former three-time Italian prime minister and the founder of the People of Liberty party, Mr. Silvio Berlusconi announced during a news conference that he is “thinking about” run for elections.
When Mr. Berlusconi was asked whether he was considering “returning to the playing field” Berlusconi replied “I am thinking about it” as his center-right party is still in doubt to hold primary elections, depending on Berlusconi’s decision.
Italy will hold Parliamentary elections March next year to pick a government and new leader to take over from Mario Monti, who came to power a year ago when Berlusconi stepped aside.
Mr. Berlusconi changed his mind many times after month if hinting; he stated at the end of October that he would not lead his People of Freedom party (PDL) in 2013 elections, but seemingly he is having a change of heart again!
PDL secretary, Angelino Alfano said that “it would not make much sense” to hold the preliminary election if Berlusconi decided to stand on his own. The center-right PDL so far is prepared to hold its own primary vote December 16.
PDL has its own wave of change coming, especially with high-voiced disagreement among members over Berlusconi’s economic policies that are losing support. The scandals following the party and Berlusconi surely do not put it on the right track to gaining support at the election, and it is more likely than not for Berlusconi to run as the head of a new party rather than find support from the PDL!
