European stocks close with little change

European stocks ended today`s session with little change in low volume trading after the Christmas, as jobless claims fell in the U.S to its lowest level since four and half years. while new home sales climbed to a two-year high.

The main concern remains the so-called fiscal cliff where Harry Reid confirmed the stumbled negotiations by saying: “Nothing’s happening” in budget talks and the largest economy is heading to the fiscal cliff.

Reid also said that a resolution to the dispute before January 1 st appears unlikely because Republicans won’t cooperate and Boehner “seems to care more about his Speakership” than to make a deal on the budget.

STOXX 600 ended higher today by 0.04% at 280.60; STOXX 50 ended lower by 0.09% at 2584.75.

CAC 40 Index  

The French benchmark index ended in the green today to settle at 3674.26 points, higher by 21.65 points or 0.59%. The index opened at 3654.09 recording a high of 3684.16 and a low at 3654.09. 

The best performers in terms of added value to the index were led by Total SA which inclined 0.80% to settle at €39.51. Following was Schneider Electric SA which surged 2.33% to settle at €55.87, while coming in third was Unibail-Rodamco SE which rose 2.26% to close at €187.90.

As for the worst performing shares, they were GDF Suez as it fell 0.58% to end at €15.45; Pernod-Ricard SA as it shed 0.44% to settle at €87.45 while EADS NV fell 0.42% to close at €29.63.

DAX Index  

German equities advanced today where the benchmark index DAX 30 ended higher by 19.65 points or 0. 26% to close at 7,655.88 The index opened at 7,652.27 recording a high of 7,676.50 and a low of 7,640.30 points. 

Driving the index higher by contributing the most to the index today were led by RWE AG that gained 1.09% to €31.58; following was by BMW AG as it added 1.05% to €73.46 and E.ON SE which added 1.00% to €14.15.

Lagging shares were Lanxess AG which fell 1.66% to €66.47, Merck KGaA as it lost 1.32% to settle at €99.57 and Henkel AG that settled at €61.43down 1.19%.

FTSE 100 Index  

The British benchmark index ended the day slightly higher to settle at 5,954.30 with a gain of 0.12 points .The index opened the day at 5,954.18 setting the high of 5,997.04 and the low of 5,942.44.

Leading shares in terms of contribution today started with Anglo American PLC which surged 2.13% to close at £1921.00; following was British American Tobacco PLC which added 0.71% to end trading at £3123.00 and Lloyds Banking Group PLC which added 2.07% to close at £149.10.

Meanwhile, lagging shares were led by HSBC Holdings PLC where it ended down by 0.44%, closing at £652.00; following was Diageo PLC which shed 0.98% to close at £1,809.50 and BP PLC which slipped 0.52% to close at £428.45.
