Zohran Kwame Mamdani was born on October 18, 1991, in Kampala, Uganda. He spent part of his childhood in South Africa before moving to New York at the age of seven. He is the son of academic Mahmood Mamdani and acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair. Zohran graduated from the Bronx High School of Science and earned his Bachelor's degree in African Studies from Bowdoin College in 2014. He became a U.S. citizen in 2018.
• Before entering politics, Zohran worked as an eviction prevention counselor, helping low-income families stay in their homes. • He was first elected in 2020 to the New York State Assembly (District 36 – Queens) and later re-elected unopposed. • As a Democratic Socialist, he has focused on issues such as housing, transportation, and energy, and has championed legislation to protect tenants and regulate the housing sector.
