Investigated by Yousef Fakhruddin, this work compiles two rare collections of popular poetry by the eminent Mamluk-era scholar Shams al-Din al-Nawaji. It presents the 'Egyptian Ballaliq' and the 'Levantine Zajal,' two vibrant forms of strophic folk poetry and song. This edition, derived from al-Nawaji's larger book 'Uqud al-La'al,' offers an invaluable window into the rich oral traditions, linguistic creativity, and cultural expressions of medieval Egypt and the Levant. It is an essential resource for researchers and enthusiasts of Arabic literature, folk arts, and the history of popular culture in the Arab world, preserving forms of expression that were central to public life.
